DAR Policies and Guidelines
This page links to policies, procedures and guidelines created and maintained by the Office of Development and Alumni Relations.
DAR staff are responsible for knowing and abiding by VCU policies. VCU’s policies articulate the requirements and expectations for behavior, actions and activities of the university community. It is imperative that each team member familiarizes themselves with our policies and complies with them diligently. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action as outlined in VCU's Code of Conduct.
There are three types of policies at VCU:
- Board of Visitors (BOV) policies address matters of university governance. Creation or substantive revision of this type of policy requires an action by the BOV (such as a vote to approve). The authority to determine when a policy warrants Board of Visitors level of approval rests with the President in consultation with General Counsel.
- Administrative policies address university-wide operational expectations and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures. They are subject to approval by the President’s Cabinet.
- Local policies meet the unique needs of, and generally apply to or affect, one unit, division, department, school or campus. Adopting a local policy requires written approval from the applicable leadership at the level of Provost or responsible Vice President, or respective designee. Local policy may not be inconsistent with approved BOV or administrative policy.
VCU’s Office of Audit and Compliance Services provides policy support and maintains the university’s Policy Library, which is the official repository of all current BOV and administrative policies. Local policies are not listed in the university policy library as they reside in the applicable unit, division, department, school or campus.

DAR guidelines are a resource of best practices to adhere to as you move about your day-to-day functions at DAR. They are highly recommended methods of conduct but do not require the same steadfast adherence as the DAR policies.
